The Veterans Education Benefits Calculator is not a generic financial aid estimator. It was built specifically for the complexity of military education benefits.
Chapter 30, 33, 35 — each has different rules, different rates, and different eligibility clocks. The calculator walks you through which chapter applies to your situation and what it actually covers.
Yellow Ribbon agreements are school-specific and change annually. The tool connects to current VA and school data so you see real numbers — not estimates — for your target institution.
After accounting for all benefits, the calculator shows your remaining cost clearly. If additional financing is the right next step, you'll know exactly how much — and why.
The Veterans Education Benefits Calculator was developed with insights from active-duty servicemembers, veterans, and university military advisors to help address the unique challenges of using military education benefits.
Education costs and funding options continue to evolve. Understanding the VA education benefits you may be eligible to receive before you enroll can help you better plan for your education, identify potential funding gaps, and make informed borrowing decisions if additional financing is needed.
The calculator takes about four minutes to complete. No registration required.
Enter your branch, discharge status, active-duty time, and any applicable reservist or Guard service. The calculator uses this to determine which benefits chapters apply to you specifically.
Select your school and program from a searchable database. The calculator uses current tuition and Yellow Ribbon Program information to provide estimates tailored to your selected institution.
Review your estimated education benefits, see what costs may be covered, and identify any remaining funding gap so you can better plan your next steps.
There is no cost to use the calculator. You will never be asked for a credit card, and using the calculator does not obligate you to apply for any loan.
No account is required to use the calculator. The calculator only asks general questions about your service history and school of interest to estimate your benefits. No personally identifiable information is collected or stored at any point.
The calculator covers the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), the Montgomery GI Bill — Active Duty (Chapter 30), Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (Chapter 35), and the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP, Chapter 1607). It will help you understand which chapter applies to your situation and what each covers.
Yellow Ribbon is a voluntary agreement between the VA and participating private schools to cover tuition costs that exceed the Post-9/11 GI Bill's cap. Each school sets its own contribution amount and the number of students it will fund each year. The calculator pulls current Yellow Ribbon data so you can see real numbers for your specific school
Yes. The calculator accounts for National Guard and Reserve service, including eligibility for REAP (Chapter 1607) and the Montgomery GI Bill — Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606). If you have been activated under Title 10 federal orders, you may also qualify for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. The tool will walk you through the criteria.
The calculator will clearly show your remaining funding gap after all applicable benefits are applied. If additional financing makes sense, AgFed can offer private student loans at competitive rates. There is no obligation to apply for any loan. The goal is to help you understand the full picture first and borrow only what you actually need.
Results are estimates based on publicly available VA benefit rates and school-reported Yellow Ribbon data. Your actual benefit amounts may vary depending on your specific discharge status, enrollment level, housing location, and the current academic year's VA rates. We recommend confirming your eligibility directly with the VA and your school's veterans' services office before making enrollment decisions.
Yes. Active-duty servicemembers may be eligible for Tuition Assistance (TA) through their branch of service, which the calculator also factors in. TA can be combined with certain GI Bill benefits in some circumstances. The tool will help you understand how these programs interact and what you may have available now versus after separation.
Active-duty servicemembers with at least six years of service may be eligible to transfer Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to a spouse or dependent child, provided they commit to additional service. The calculator includes a transferability section so dependents can estimate what they may receive. Note that eligibility and transfer approval is determined by the DoD. The VA does not make transfer decisions.
The federal student loan landscape is changing significantly. Proposed changes to graduate lending programs mean that many students who previously relied on federal loans to fill funding gaps may have fewer options going forward. For veterans, this makes fully understanding and maximizing your earned VA benefits more important than ever before you commit to a school, a program, or a loan.
