Youth Financial Literacy

AgFed believes that financial education is important and it is very important to teach children the basic of handling money and finances.

Providing young people in their formative years with the basics of financial education can give them the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to manage their finances once they enter the real world.

We offer two programs:

1. Money Matters

  • Free financial education for children ages 8-12.
  • Children will gain a basic understanding of everyday money matters, such as, making change, need vs. want, opening a savings account and making simple choices with money.
  • They will have a set amount of weekly allowance to spend. Then they will have a chance to go around to each table and make simple purchasing decisions.
  • They will also need to determine how much of their “allowance” they will want to save every week.
  • Money Matters Sample Kit - it includes the Budget Worksheet and sample table cards of what types of items the participant will be able to "purchase". The kit gives you a glimpse in to what the participant will use and see during the exercise.

2. “Real Life”

  • Free financial education for children 13 and older.
  • Each child will be randomly assigned careers complete with net and gross monthly income, a credit score, and a checking account with $1,500. They will shop for apartments, electronics, cars and more at various tables where they will chose to pay cash, use a credit card or get a loan for major purchases such as cars and furniture.
  • They will track their income and spending on a budget worksheet to easily determine how much money, if any, they have left at the end of the month for savings and emergency expenses.
  • At the end of the journey they will review their results with a Financial Counselor. The Financial Counselors will help them identify budget red flags such as apartment rents and car payments that were too high for their income level.
  • Real Life Sample Kit - it includes the Budget Worksheet, salary calculator and sample table cards of what types of items the participant will be able to "purchase". The kit gives you a glimpse in to what the participant will use and see during the exercise.

AgFed is committed in the education of our youths to prepare them for a lifetime of financial responsibility. If you would like AgFed to host this event at your school contact us at marketing@agriculturefcu.org.

The Financial Reality Fair concept was created within the credit union industry in response to the growing emphasis on financial literacy education in public schools.
